Origin story & oral tradition
The Wanga (Abawanga) are the only Luhya sub-tribe to have developed a centralised kingdom. Their king, known as the Nabongo, held both political and spiritual authority. The Wanga kingdom, based in present-day Mumias, was the most powerful political entity among the Luhya before colonialism. Their founding ancestor Wanga was a son of Shiundu. The Nabongo Mumia collaborated with British colonialists in the late 19th century, making Mumias a key administrative hub. The current Wanga homeland is Mumias East and Matungu in Kakamega County.
