Origin story & oral tradition
The Banyala represent communities in Nambale, Busia County, distinct from the Abanyala of Kakamega. They settled along the shores of Lake Victoria and are known as accomplished fishermen. Their oral traditions suggest migrations from the north, possibly connected to the broader movement of Bantu peoples into the Lake Victoria basin. They share cultural practices with the Samia and Khayo, their immediate neighbours.
