Origin story & oral tradition
The Tiriki (Abatiriki) are unique among the Luhya in that they are believed to have originally been Terik, a Kalenjin-speaking group, who were absorbed into the Luhya cultural sphere over several generations. They settled in present-day Hamisi and Vihiga areas. The Tiriki adopted the Luhya Bantu language and customs including circumcision, while retaining some Kalenjin influences in their age-set system. They are known for their strong sense of identity and unique cultural synthesis.
