Origin story & oral tradition
The Marama (Abamarama) inhabit the Butere-Mumias area of Kakamega County alongside the Kisa. Their founding ancestor Mumarama is said to have been a brother of Mukisa, explaining the strong ties between the two sub-tribes. The Marama territory borders the Wanga kingdom to the west, and the Marama had complex historical relations with the Nabongo. They are part of the sugarcane belt of western Kenya and are known for weaving and basket-making traditions.
