Origin story & oral tradition
The Kisa (Abakisa) settled in the Butere area of Kakamega County. Their founding ancestor Mukisa is remembered as a skilled negotiator who secured fertile land through alliances with neighbouring groups. The Kisa and Marama are closely related, sharing territory in the Butere-Mumias sub-county, and are sometimes referred to together. The Kisa are known for their agricultural productivity, particularly in sugarcane and maize cultivation.
