Origin story & oral tradition
The Samia (Basamia) settled along the shores of Lake Victoria in the area now known as Busia County. They share strong cultural and linguistic ties with the Baganda and Basoga peoples of Uganda, suggesting origins from the interlacustrine Bantu migrations. The Samia are known as skilled fishermen and farmers. Their territory straddles the Kenya-Uganda border, and they maintain close relations with their Ugandan kin across the Nzoia and Sio rivers.
