One of the major language phyla of Africa, spanning from the Nile Valley to central and eastern Africa. Includes approximately 200 languages spoken by over 50 million people across Sudan, South Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Chad, and the DRC. Proposed by Joseph Greenberg in 1963.
