About this language family
The largest branch of Niger-Congo, comprising over 500 languages spoken across central, eastern, and southern Africa. Originated in the Cross River region of present-day Nigeria/Cameroon, spreading through the Bantu expansion (c. 3000 BCE onwards). In East Africa, includes Gikuyu, Kiswahili, Luhya, Kamba, and Meru among others.
