A branch of the Afroasiatic family originating in the Middle East and Horn of Africa. Includes Arabic, Hebrew, Amharic, and Tigrinya. Arabic is the most widely spoken Semitic language globally. In East Africa, Semitic languages arrived via centuries of Indian Ocean trade and Omani settlement along the Swahili coast.
